In Computed Tomography (CT), an artifact is any discrepancy between the reconstructed image and the actual physical object. These distortions appear in the image but do not exist in the original sample. Because artifacts can obscure defects or affect density calculations, recognizing and mitigating them is critical for accurate analysis.

Artifacts are typically categorized by their cause. Common examples include beam hardening, metal artifacts, and ring artifacts.
