Ring artifacts appear as concentric circular patterns superimposed on CT cross-sectional images. They primarily originate from non-uniform sensitivity or calibration errors in individual detector elements.
Because the detector elements remain at a fixed distance from the center of rotation, a single element with an incorrect output traces a circular path during the scan, creating a ring. These artifacts can be minimized through regular detector calibration (gain and offset correction) or by applying specific image processing algorithms.
