Piezo actuators utilize piezoelectric elements that expand and contract when voltage is applied. Unlike other actuator types, they are characterized by short travel distances (stroke) and high force generation. These properties make piezo actuators ideal for applications requiring ultra-precise positioning.

Piezo actuators are available in various configurations, including stack and stage types. Many models incorporate built-in displacement sensors, such as strain gauges, to enable closed-loop control. This allows for highly accurate feedback operation. Since the deformation of a piezo element is proportional to the applied voltage, high-voltage control is essential. Electrically, piezo actuators behave as capacitive loads; they consume minimal power during static (DC) operation but require significant current for high-speed dynamic (AC) driving.
