Piezo actuators are devices that utilize a piezoelectric element, which expands and contracts when a voltage is applied. Compared to other types of actuators, they are characterized by their short travel distance (stroke) and high force generation. For this reason, piezo actuators are used in devices that require precise positioning.

Piezo actuators come in various configurations, such as straight and stage types. They can also be classified by whether they incorporate a built-in displacement sensor (e.g., a strain gauge) for closed-loop control. Piezo actuators with built-in strain gauges can be controlled more accurately by feedback control. High voltage is used because the higher the voltage applied to the piezo element, the larger the deformation. As they behave like capacitive loads, they consume very little power in static (DC) operation. However, significant current can be required for high-speed dynamic (AC) operation.
