Precautions for Using Negative-Common Power Supplies

Category
Power Supply Usage FAQs

In negative-common power supplies, the Common (COM) terminal for analog remote control is internally connected to the negative output terminal. Consequently, the COM terminal and the negative output share the same electrical potential.

Critical Precaution:
Great care is required when using analog control signals (e.g., Vcon, Icon, Vmon, Imon). If you ground the positive output terminal to operate the unit as a negative voltage source, do not ground the external controller's COM terminal.

If the controller's COM is grounded while the power supply's positive output is also grounded, a direct short circuit occurs across the power supply output. This can result in severe damage to both the power supply and the external control circuitry.

To prevent this, ensure the external controller is kept floating (not grounded) or use an electrically isolated control interface.
