A photomultiplier tube is a photodetector that converts weak light received into electrons and amplifies the electrons. The light incident on the vacuum tube is converted into photoelectrons at the input surface. The photoelectrons are accelerated by high voltage and collide with the secondary electron surface of the dynode, generating secondary electrons. These secondary electrons are amplified and detected.

Photomultiplier tubes are not only used in electron microscopes, but are also used in Nox meters and Sox meters, which measure the concentration of gases by irradiating sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides with ultraviolet light and capturing the weak light generated by the oxides in the excited state. Fluorescence analysis is also used in blood tests to analyze the weak luminescence generated by the reaction of reagents. The Kamiokande, which detects neutrinos, has become very famous due in part to the Nobel Prize it received.

If a scintillator, a material that converts radiation into light, is placed in front of the photomultiplier tube, it can also be used for radiation detection. Radiation detection devices that use photomultiplier tubes are used in gamma-ray measuring instruments and CT scanners. In a photomultiplier tube, a high voltage of about 800 V to 1,500 V is applied to amplify electrons.
