Mass spectrometry is a method of detecting the amount of ions contained in a substance by converting the substance into gaseous ions and measuring the mass and number of ions. The substance is identified by analyzing what type and how many ions are contained in the substance.

A sample in its liquid or gaseous state is vaporized and ionized by an ion source. When the ionized molecules pass through the magnetic or electric field of the mass spectrometer, they are separated by the difference in mass and charge, and analyzed.

Mass spectrometers are classified into several types according to the method of ionizing the substance and the structure of the part that analyzes the ions. For ionization, there are two methods: one is to apply an electric current to a filament to generate thermal electrons, which collide with the material, and the other is to apply a high voltage to utilize the tunneling effect.

For the analysis part, there are two methods: one is to select the ions that reach the detector by the action of electric and magnetic fields, and the other is to analyze the accelerated ions by the time they reach the detector.
