An inverter is used to control the AC voltage and frequency. Alternating current has a constant voltage and frequency in accordance with the regulations in each country. The voltage or frequency of electricity in alternating current cannot subsequently be changed to any value or frequency. So, it is necessary to convert the electricity to DC and then back to AC again in order to change the voltage or frequency of the alternating current. This is when inverters are important for the purpose.

An inverter consists of a "converter circuit" used to convert AC to DC, an "inverter circuit" to convert DC to AC again, and a capacitor in between.

In Japan, inverter circuit, converter circuit and the capacitor are all referred as "inverter" in general.

  • AC motors: controlling both voltage and frequency (VVVF)
  • Fluorescent lamps, electromagnetic cookers (IH rice cookers, etc.): mainly controlling frequency by raising higher than the one of the commercial power supply (CVVF)
  • Computer: maintaining a constant voltage and frequency constant (CVCF)
