A DC/DC converter is a device that converts a DC voltage to another voltage. By using the device, the voltage can be raised or lowered to match another specific voltage. Electronic components such as ICs used in PC boards have their own operating voltage, and if the voltage becomes unstable, they will malfunction. For this reason, DC/DC converters are used to convert the voltage when supplying DC current to such devices, also known as "decodeco" in Japan.

In a vehicle's DC/DC converter, the power generated by the motor on the load is returned to the battery on the input. Therefore, a bidirectional power supply is needed to simulate both power running and regenerative operation.

DC current does not have the same frequency and phase differences as AC current. Only the voltage and the amount of current (resistance) determine the conditions. DC current can range from low voltages, such as those used in ICs and electronic circuits, to high voltages, such as those used to run the motors of electric vehicles.

When evaluating DC/DC converters, it is necessary to simulate actual usage conditions, such as varying the voltage on the input side or changing the load on the output side to vary the current. Especially in the case of DC/DC converters used in automobiles, many of them use regenerative energy from the viewpoint of reducing environmental impact.
